It acts in the central nervous system and crosses the blood-brain barrier. Its mechanism of action is related to the inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) activity in the brain and spinal cord. Cyclooxygenase is the enzyme responsible for prostaglandin synthesis. Paracetamol, unlike nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), has no anti-inflammatory effect because it practically does not inhibit cyclooxygenase activity and prostaglandin synthesis in peripheral tissues. Due to the risk of overdose, several medicines containing paracetamol should not be used at the same time.
