Damiana, also known as Turner's diffused (Turnera diffusa Willd. Ex Shult.) is a small shrub up to 2 meters tall, occurring naturally in South America, Central America, India, and Africa. Damiana owes its properties to the many biologically active substances it contains. The leaves of this plant contain: flavonoids, carbohydrates, including glucose, rhamnose, fructose, sucrose, steroids, squalene, pyrone, tetrafillin B, arbutin, tannins, vitamin C, elements such as magnesium, copper, iron, zinc, saponins, proteins, and essential oils containing compounds such as thymol. Damiana leaf has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Caffeine is also present in the leaf extract.
Damiana leaf may have antibacterial effects. Apigenin, found in alcoholic leaf extracts of this plant, may have a calming effect.
