Black healers have been using devil's claw for thousands of years to treat many ailments. The only place on earth where this wonderful plant grows is in the Kalahari Desert in southwest Africa. In this extremely dry, virtually vegetation-free area, devil's claw had to develop a special root system to store moisture. Growing to a depth of 120 cm, it branches out into a bundle of tuberous, potato-like roots. One hundred kilograms of these roots yield six kilograms of raw material containing the active ingredient.
It gets its name from the spiny pods that develop from bright red flowers. These pods are like devil's claws—so strong that pliers are required to free them from animals' hooves.
Each root is dug up separately, sliced, dried, and grated. The result is a sticky substance that is difficult to handle. European settlers discovered this extraordinary African herb in the early 20th century. One of them sent samples from Dr. Bernhard Zorn, director of the Institute of Physiology and Chemistry at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany.
Of course, there were first therapeutic experiments on rats. They induced gout using formaldehyde, and when inflammation developed after 12 to 14 days, the root began to be administered in the form of an infusion, orally, and by injection. Three series of trials were conducted. After five weeks of treatment with devil's claw, there was a significant reduction in swelling and restoration of normal foot movement, while in the control group, there was little spontaneous relief of gout.
The famous Swiss herbalist, after examining Devil's Claw as a remedy for health measure, recommends to everyone an annual treatment with the root, claiming that it will eliminate toxic residues from our body and allow us to enjoy a healthier life.
