VASAKA (Justicia adhatoda)

Vasaka is a shrub with white, lance-shaped leaves 10 to 15 cm long. They have smooth edges and grow on short petioles.

The plant is native to Asia and can be found in Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, and also Panama.

Vasaka leaves contain essential oil and quinazoline alkaloids, vasicine, vasicinone, and deoxyvasicine.

The roots contain vascinolone, vascol, peganine, and 2-hydroxy-4-glucosyl-oxychalcone.

The flowers contain beta-sitosterol-D-glucoside, kaempferol and its glycosides, and the bioflavonoid quercetin.

In Ayurveda, mainly the properties of dried Vasaka leaves are used.
